The Mazda bus that caught fire moments before Odogbolu on the Sagamu-Benin expressway on Wednesday killed seven persons, according to the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE).
The incidence was confirmed to news reporters in Abeokuta by Mr. Babatunde Akinbiyi, the spokesperson for TRACE.
Seven additional people were hurt in the mishap, which happened about 2.50 p.m., according to Akinbiyi.
He claims that an engine overflow caused the AGL 886 YD bus to abruptly catch fire.
In the single deadly crash, he said that seven women perished and seven others were hurt.
Witnesses said that the car’s engine took fire as it was traveling from the Lagos neighborhood of Kosofe toward Epe for a church revival to ring in the new year.
“There were 15 people in the commercial bus, seven of whom died from burn injuries and seven more had significant burns.
But, he said, “the bus driver got away.”
The injured people were reportedly transferred to Ijebu Ode General Hospital for treatment, according to a TRACE representative.
Before starting a voyage, he advised drivers to periodically service and maintain their cars.
