The Rivers State office of Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) presidential candidate, has been closed.
The move was carried out on orders from the state government, according to the Rivers State PDP presidential campaign council.
The office, which is located in GRA Port Harcourt, was shut down in the early hours of Friday.
Nyesom Wike, the governor of Rivers State, signed Executive Order 22 a few weeks ago, making it illegal for political parties to set up shop in residential zones without government permission.
The PDP PCC in Rivers State, however, said that its media team had requested permission from the state government but had not heard back for several weeks.
As a result, the organization denounced the statute for “rubber stamping on our fundamental right to free expression of opinion.”
It also said: “This egregious move by the Rivers State Government, seen in the prism of politics, tends to militarise our democracy and renders our dear state politically recessive when juxtaposed with other states in the country.”
