Yinka Akinwande, a nursing mother, was given a four-year prison term by the Federal High Court’s Ado Ekiti Division for stealing noodles worth N5.5 million.
The defendant “under false pretense and with intent to deceive unlawfully obtained goods (noodles) valued at N5,575,540 from one Bolanle Akarakiri between August 2015 and October 2019 in the Ado-Ekiti Judicial Division, so committing a crime,” the accusation reads.
According to a Punch article, the complainant and the investigating police officer, John Olotu, were brought as witnesses by the police prosecutor, Mr. Samson Osobu, who claimed that the defendant committed the crime while working as a sales representative for the complainant.
R.A. Mohammed, the defense attorney, begged the court to balance justice with mercy on behalf of her client, a nursing mother of a 4-year-old child.
The defense attorney’s beg for mercy was taken into consideration, according to Justice Babs Kuewumi.
“From the evidence of the prosecution, the prosecutor has proved his case and the court finds the defendant guilty as charged. I hereby sentence the defendant to a four-year custodial sentence,” he added.
