Southampton, Leicester City, Crystal Palace, Everton, and Aston Villa all suffered losses on the day the Premier League resumed play after the World Cup break.
Brighton and Southampton met there at St. Mary’s Stadium. The visitors ran away with a 3-1 victory after a hard-fought 90 minutes of Premier League play due to goals from Lallana, Perraud, and March.
With regards to Leicester City, the relegation-threatened team was defeated 3-0 by the guests Newcastle United on the strength of goals from Wood, Almirón, and Joelinton.
In a similar vein, Crystal Palace hosted Fulham but lost 0-3. Palace was exposed as a result of the red cards given to Mitchell (34th minute) and Tomkins (57th minute). The host, therefore, had no chance of winning the game.
On Boxing Day, Everton hosted Wolves and were a poor host, losing 1-2 to their guests thanks to goals from Podence and A’t-Nouri in the 22nd and 90th minutes, respectively.
The following day, Liverpool traveled to Villa Park to play Aston Villa. Salah’s goal in the fifth minute, Van Dijk’s goal in the 37th minute, and Bajcetic’s goal in the 90th minute gave Jurgen Klopp and his team a 1-3 victory (81st minute).
To kick off the Boxing Day Premier League games, Brentford hosted Tottenham Hotspur earlier in the day. A 2-2 draw was the score at game’s end.
